Ann Wasserman Memorial Community Garden

About the Garden

Welcome to the Ann Wasserman Community Garden at Markham Park in Sunrise, Florida! This community garden is the first one created by the Weston Community Garden Society, which is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The garden was named in honor of Ann Wasserman, founding treasurer of the Weston Community Garden Society. Ann’s enthusiasm for the garden society in its early days helped bring the organization to life and we are extremely proud to name our first garden in her honor.

On the property and within the fenced area, there are twenty three 4' X 10' raised garden beds filled with high quality, organic soil, which individuals, families, or groups may reserve on a yearly basis. There is also a variety of fruit trees and a Florida native flower pollinator garden. The Weston Community Garden Society are planning to create row crops where food will be grown for donation to local community food banks, as well as a shared herb garden for volunteers.

Outside the fence is the food forest and Ann Wasserman reflection area that overlooks the lake which lies alongside the property. The food forest is a a multi-layered, self-sustaining ecosystem designed to mimic a natural forest, prioritizing edible and medicinal plants including trees, shrubs, vines, and a ground cover--all while promoting biodiversity and healthy soil. We are always adding to this area to build it up.

The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul.
